How did the EU originate?
Began as the European Coal and Steel Community (1951). Expanded via the Treaty of Rome (1957) to form the European Economic Community. Became the European Union in 1993.
How many EU countries use the Euro?
20 out of 27 member countries use the Euro, while some countries retain their own currencies. The Euro facilitates trade and financial stability among users.
What is the European Council?
Sets the political direction for the EU. Members are appointed, not elected, and it focuses on long-term strategy and major policy decisions.
What is the European Commission?
Proposes and develops laws for the EU. Members are appointed by governments and oversee the implementation of EU policies.
What is the Council of Ministers?
Votes and adopts laws proposed by the Commission. Members are appointed by member governments, ensuring representation of national interests.
What is the European Parliament?
Elected by EU citizens, approves the EU budget, and has limited law-making powers.
What is the Court of Justice?
Interprets EU laws, oversees other EU institutions, and ensures laws are applied consistently across member countries.
What are the Copenhagen Criteria?
Requirements for joining the EU, including stable institutions, a market economy, and adherence to regulations, ensuring compatibility with existing EU standards.
What is the US–Canada Free Trade Agreement?
Established in 1989 between US and Canada, removing most trade barriers. Later expanded to include Mexico, evolving into NAFTA and subsequently USMCA in 2020.
What is USMCA?
Updated version of NAFTA, including regional content rules for car manufacturing and promoting trade and economic cooperation among US, Canada, and Mexico.
What is CAFTA?

Association of Southeast Asian Nations (1967), a bloc of 10 member countries promoting free trade and cultural/social cooperation.
What is APEC?
Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (1989) with 21 member nations focusing on broader trade and economic cooperation.
What is the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC)?
Established in 1980, consisting of 6 member countries operating a common market with free movement of labor and business ownership.
What is the African Union (AU)?
Established in 2002, promoting peace, stability, and economic cooperation in Africa and encouraging regional development and integration.
