Mechanical Waves
Disturbances that strictly require a physical medium to propagate (sound waves, seismic waves).
Electromagnetic Waves
Waves capable of traveling through a vacuum without requiring a physical medium (e.g., light, radio, microwaves, X-rays).
Lever
A rigid bar pivoting around a fixed fulcrum (crowbars, seesaws, pruning shears).
Pulley
A grooved wheel carrying a rope or cable to lift heavy loads (flagpole hoisting systems, multi-wheel cranes).
Inclined Plane
A flat, sloped surface that reduces the effort required to raise an object (wooden ramps, wheelchair access ramps, winding mountain trails).
Wheel and Axle
A larger circular wheel attached to a smaller central shaft to multiply force or rotation (screwdrivers, bicycle gear systems, steering wheels, hose faucets).
Wedge
Two inclined planes placed back-to-back used to split or cut objects apart (chef's knives, logsplitting wedges).
Screw
An inclined plane wrapped helically around a central cylinder (threaded metal fasteners, rotating hydraulic jack screws).
Translational Motion
Motion where an object moves entirely from one point in space to another along a straight line, curved path, or vertical trajectory.
Rotational Motion
Motion where an object spins around an internal central axis.
Crest
The maximum point or peak of a wave bump.
Trough
The lowest point or trough of a wave bump.
Amplitude
The vertical distance from the equilibrium (rest) position to the crest.
Wavelength
The spatial distance between two consecutive identical points (crests or troughs).
Period
The time required for one full wave cycle to complete.
