Higher order classical conditioning
A process where a conditioned stimulus is paired with a new neutral stimulus, creating additional conditioned stimuli and responses.
Conditioned stimulus
A previously neutral stimulus that, after being paired with an unconditioned stimulus, starts to elicit a conditioned response.
Unconditioned stimulus
A stimulus that naturally and automatically triggers an unconditioned response without prior learning.
Unconditioned response
The automatic, natural reaction to an unconditioned stimulus.
Pavlov's experiment
An experiment demonstrating classical conditioning where a tone was paired with food to elicit salivation.
Neutral stimulus
A stimulus that initially produces no specific response before conditioning.
Thrill of cookies in classical conditioning
In the context of classical conditioning, cookies serve as an unconditioned stimulus that evokes happiness, making a previously neutral stimulus like the grandmother a conditioned stimulus.
Perfume as a conditioned stimulus
A neutral stimulus (like perfume) that becomes a conditioned stimulus when consistently associated with a conditioned stimulus (like grandma) that elicits a positive emotional response.
Chain of associations
The concept where multiple stimuli are linked together through conditioning, leading to complex emotional responses.
