What’s infrared radiation?
It’s a part of the electromagnetic spectrum.
What do all objects do for infrared radiation?
Emit and absorb.
What’s emit and absorb?
Emit is to give out and absorb is to take in.
The higher the temperature of an object does what?
The more infrared radiation it emits in a given time.
What else is a good emitter in infrared radiation?
A good absorber.
An object at a constant temperature: (1)
Infrared radiation emitted= infrared radiation absorbed.
An object at a constant temperature: (2)
Infrared radiation is emitted across a continuous range of wavelengths.
What happens when an object’s temperature increases?
It absorbs infrared radiation at a higher rate than it emits.
What happens when an object’s temperature decreases?
It emits infrared radiation at a higher rate than it absorbs.
What does this rule apply to?
Earth.
What’s a black body to infrared radiation?
A theoretical object that absorbs 100% of the radiation that falls on it.
What would a black body do to radiation?
It wouldn’t reflect or transmit any radiation but it would be a perfect emitter of radiation.
