4 Basic Types of Movement
Gliding (One bone across the surface of another)
Angular Movement (Movements change the angle betewen bones)
Rotation (Movement around a bone’s long axis)
Special Movements

GLIDING
Gliding
Flat surfaces of two bones slip across each other

ANGULAR MOVEMENTS
Flexion
Decreasing the angle between two bones; usually in the sagittal plane

Extension
Increasing the angle between bones; usually in the sagittal plane

ABduction
Moving a limb away from the body midline in the frontal plane

ADduction
Moving a limb toward the body midline in the frontal plane

Circumduction
Moving a limb or finger so that it describes a cone in space

ROTATION
Rotation
Turning a bone around the longitudinal axis

Medial Rotation
Rotating toward the median plane

Lateral Rotation
Rotating away from the median plane

SPECIAL MOVEMENTS
Elevation
Lifting a body part superiorly

Depression
Moving the elevated part inferiorly

Protraction
Moving a body part in the anterior direction
Nonangular movement anteriorly

Retraction
Moving a body part in the posterior direction
Nonangular movement posteriorly

Supination
Forearm rotates laterally, palm faces anteriorly

Pronation
Forearm rotates medially, palm faces anteriorly

Opposition
Thumb moves across the palm to touch the tips of other fingers

Inversion
Turns sole medially

Eversion
Turns sole laterally

Dorsiflexion
Lifting the foot so its superior surfaces approaches the shin

Plantar Flexion
Depressing the foot, elevating the heel
