Anything that has mass and takes up space.
Mass

Volume
The amount of space an object takes up.
Particle
A tiny piece that makes up all matter.
Particle Theory of Matter
The idea that all matter is made of tiny particles that are always moving.
What happens to particles when heated?
They gain energy, move faster, and spread farther apart.
What happens to particles when cooled?
They lose energy, move slower, and move closer together.
Solid
A state of matter with a definite shape and definite volume.
Liquid
A state of matter with a definite volume but no definite shape.
Gas
A state of matter with no definite shape and no definite volume.
How do particles move in a solid?
They are tightly packed and vibrate in place.
How do particles move in a liquid?
They are close together and slide past one another.
