Central Nervous System

Spinal cord and brain.

Peripheral Nervous System

anything that lies outside of the central nervous system, somatic and autonomic

Somatic

making choices, walking, taking notes

Autonomic

• doing things unknowingly, breathing, heartbeat

• broken down into sympathetic and parasympathetic

Sympathetic

fight or flight, speeds things up, not controlling it, everything speeds up, digestion decreases

Parasympathetic

Rest and digest, pumps the breaks, restores homeostasis, everything decreases, digestion increases

Endocrine System

Network of glands that produce and secrete hormones into the bloodstream

Hypothalamus

bridge between endocrine and nervous system

Nervous system

Fast, short-term responses, nerves

Endocrine System

slower, long-lasting effect

Feedback loop

both systems use negative and positive feedback to maintain balance

Pituitary Gland

positive= increase behavior, negative=decrease behavior

Hormones

Internal, endocrine system, long lasting, works similarly to neurotransmitters

Neurotransmitters

nervous system, internal, quick acting, works together

Adrenaline

fight or flight

Leptin

hunger, full

Melatonin

sleep

Ghrelin

hunger, stomach pain
