What are the immediate care for newborn ?

• APGAR scoring

• drying, cover with clean dry linen and place baby under radiant warmer

• clear airway by gentle suction

• tie both identification band for both mother and baby

• physical examination

• newborn reflexes

What do we check for baby’s mouth ?

• cleft lip

• cleft palate

• loose teeth

What do we observe in general condition of the baby ?

• if the baby is well or not

• if any cyanosis or grunting

What do we take note on the head examination ?

• fontanelles and sutures

• caput/ cephalhaematoma/ moulding/ injuries

What do we detect in face examination ?

• chromosomal abnormalities

• eyes for cataract or sub conjunctival hemorrhage

What do we check when doing upper arms and lower limbs examination ?

• length

• fractures

• paralysis

• missing/ extra digits

• webbing of fingers

What do we take note when observing chest ?

• respiratory problems

• pegion chest (chest appears to be higher)

• nipple well formed and symmetrically

What are the things we examine for umbilical cord ?

• type of cord : normal or jelly cord

• any bleeding

• any umbilical hernia

What do we check when examine genitalia ?

to exclude

• intersex

• prematurity

• undescended testis in baby boy

Why do we check spine and anus of the baby ?

• spine : to exclude spinal bifida/ occult spinal bifida

• anus : to exclude imperforated anus using thermometer

• how : adducting the hip while applying light pressure on the knee, directing the force posteriorly

• Care of umbilical cord (daily dressings and observe for any abnormality, cord will normally falls after 5-10 days)
