Somatoform Disorders
Disorders characterized by physical symptoms that cannot be fully explained by a medical condition.
Functional Neurological Symptom Disorder
A somatic disorder where neurological symptoms are inconsistent with organic causes, traced back to psychological triggers.
Factitious Disorder
A condition where a person feigns or produces symptoms of illness without a clear external motive to gain the role of a patient.
Disproportionate Somatic Experience
Physical sensations that are excessive or not explained by any underlying physical cause.
Fibromyalgia
A chronic condition characterized by widespread pain, fatigue, and other symptoms, often involving somatoform aspects.
Dissociative Identity Disorder
A disorder characterized by the presence of two or more distinct personality states, each with its own pattern of perceiving and relating.
Dissociative Amnesia
Loss of memory that occurs as a result of dissociation, typically following trauma or stress.
Derealization
An alteration in the perception of one’s surroundings, where the external world feels unreal or distorted.
Depersonalization
A feeling of detachment from one’s self, as if watching oneself from outside.
Identity Alteration
Variations in a person's sense of self, including changes in age perception, gender identity, and personality traits.
Anterograde Amnesia
Dissociative amnesia affecting the ability to form or store new memories.
Retrograde Amnesia
Dissociative amnesia affecting access to old memories.
Pain vs. Somatoform
Pain is physical suffering, while somatoform disorders involve physical sensations that are disproportionate to physical causes.
Munchausen Syndrome
A type of factitious disorder where an individual feigns or induces illness in themselves.
Munchausen by Proxy
A condition where an individual deliberately produces or feigns illness in someone they care for.
Incontinence
Inability to control bodily urination or defecation.
Stress Response
Physiological and psychological changes in reaction to stress, potentially triggering functional neurological symptoms.
Common Symptoms of Functional Neurological Disorder
Blindness, paralysis, inability to speak, deafness, numbness, difficulty swallowing, incontinence, balance issues, seizures.
Seizures
Abrupt disruptions to the brain's electrical activity, which may occur in functional neurological disorder.
Balance Problems
Difficulties maintaining stability, often reported in patients with functional neurological symptom disorder.
