Podzol Soil
A type of soil characterized by distinct horizons due to rapid leaching of minerals, often found in coniferous woodland.
Leaching
The process by which nutrients and minerals are washed out of the soil, often due to high levels of precipitation.
Iron Pan
A layer in the soil formed by the accumulation of iron and aluminium oxides that impedes drainage.
Horizon A
The upper layer of Podzol soil which is characterized by rapid leaching and is often ash grey in color.
Horizon B
The layer below Horizon A, filled with mixed iron and aluminium oxides, often reddish brown in color.
Acidic Humus
A thin layer of organic material derived from coniferous needles that contributes to soil acidity and slows decomposition.
Distinct Horizons
Clearly defined layers in soil due to limited mixing and the action of soil biota.
Waterlogging
A condition in which soil becomes saturated with water, often caused by iron pan impeding drainage.
Coniferous Trees
Trees such as pines that dominate Podzol regions, producing nutrient-rich leaf litter.
Eluviation
The process of leaching minerals from the upper soil horizon to lower horizons.
