Miser Catulle, desinas ineptire,
et quod vides perisse perditum ducas.
fumarte quadam candidi tibi soles,
cum ventitabas quo puella ducebat
amata vobis quantum amabitur nulla.
ibi illa multa cum iocosa fiebant,
quae tu volebas nec puella nolebat,
fulsere vere candidi tibi soles.
Lovesick Catullus, stop playing the fool and consider that which you see to have died to be dead or destroyed. At one time, the suns shone bright for you when you were coming often to where the girl was leading. She having been loved by us, as much as no girl will be loved. There, when those many playful things were happening, which you were wanting, and the girl was not not wanting, truly, the suns shone bright for you.
nunciam illa non vult: tu quoque impotens noli,
nec quae fugit sectare, nec miser vive,
sed obstinata mente perfer, obdura.
vale puella, iam Catullus obdurat,
nec te requiret nec rogabit invitam.
at tu dolebis, cum rogaberis nulla.
Now, she no longer wants: you also powerless, do not want. Do not follow she who fleas. Don’t live lovesick, but endure with a stubborn mind, be strong. Goodbye girl, Catullus is strong now, he will neither scale you nor ask for you willingly, but you will grieve when you will be asked nothing.
scelesta, vae te, quae tibi manet vita?
quis nunc te adibit? cui videberis bella?
quem nunc amabis? cuius esse diceris?
quem basiabis? cui labella mordebis?
at tu, Catulle, destinatus obdura.
Wicked woman, alas, to you, what life remains for you? Now, who will approach you? To whom will you seem beautiful? Whom will you love now? Whose will you be said to be? Whom will you kiss? Whose little lips will you bite? but you, Catullus, endure stubbornly.
