Cross Connection
Any connection or structural arrangement between a potable water system and another fluid system through which backflow can occur and contamination could enter the potable water system.
BackFlow
The flow of any substance back into a potable water system. this could be any foreign liquid, gas or solid that enters the potable water system resulting from one of two conditions. Backpressure & Backsiphonage
Backpressure
A condition in which a system that is cross-connected to a potable water system is at a higher pressure than the water system.
Ex, Chemical storage tank that is pressurized to a higher pressure than the water system it is connected to.
Backsiphonage
The condition under which foreign material is drawn into the water system because the system pressure is less than atmospheric pressure. Any time the system is depressurized back siphonage can occur.
