Spiracles
Passage of air into and out of the insect's body; often lined with fine hairs/bristles that filter air as it enters; contain valves that can close in order to prevent water loss.
Tracheal Tubes
Highly branched to increase the surface area:volume ratio available for gas exchange.
Tracheoles
Lined with fluids into which gases can dissolve, increasing the surface area for gas exchange.
Taenidia (Chitin Rings)
Spiral folds of chitin lining the surface of the tracheal acts like a reinforcing wire that keeps the airways open during body movements, while allowing some flexibility. This ensures that the gas exchange surface is ventilated - that a concentration gradient is maintained.
What is breathing in humans?
The movement of air into and out of the lungs.
Where does gas exchange occur in humans?
At the surface of the lungs.
