What are atoms?
Building blocks of all matter.
What are the three main types of sub-atomic particles?
Protons, Neutrons, and Electrons
What is the charge of a proton?
Positively charged
What is the charge of a neutron?
Neutral (no charge)
What is the charge of an electron?
Negatively charged
Where are protons and neutrons located?
In the nucleus
Where are electrons located?
In shells around the nucleus
What is the atomic number of an element?
The number of protons in its nucleus
What is the mass number?
Number of protons + number of neutrons
What are isotopes?
Atoms that belong to the same element, with the same number of protons, but different numbers of neutrons.
In atomic notation, what does X represent?
Chemical Symbol
In atomic notation, what does A represent?
Atomic Mass (of Isotope)
In atomic notation, what does Z represent?
Atomic Number
Why are masses on the periodic table expressed as decimals?
Weighted averages of all known isotopes of the element.
