Cognitive Psychology

The study of cognitive processes, which are the mental operations that allow individuals to think, feel, and act.

Biological Psychology

The field of psychology that attempts to study the underlying brain processes that produce cognitive processes.

Herman Grid

A low-level visual phenomenon where line intersections appear slightly gray or dirty in peripheral vision, but return to white when looked at directly.

Rotating Wheel Phenomenon

A low-level visual illusion where shapes appear to spin when viewed in the peripheral vision, but stop spinning when looked at directly.

Storm Cloud Phenomenon

A visual phenomenon where motion detectors in the visual system are activated by a rotating stimulus, causing an illusion of reverse motion once the stimulus is removed.

Implicit Knowledge in Imagery

Knowledge that is stored within a mental picture, allowing a person to read or extract details (such as which hand the Statue of Liberty holds the torch in) from the mental image.

Semantic Satiation

A language phenomenon where the same word functions as different parts of speech within a single sentence structure.
