Nutrient Classification
Categories of nutrients including water, proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, vitamins, and minerals.
Essential Nutrients
Nutrients that are necessary for animal health and cannot be synthesized by the body.
Nonessential Nutrients
Nutrients that can be produced by the body and do not need to be obtained from the diet.
GI Tract
Gastrointestinal tract responsible for digestion and nutrient absorption.
Ruminants
Animals having four stomach compartments: reticulum, rumen, omasum, and abomasum.
Carbohydrates
Primary energy source for animals, divided into monosaccharides, disaccharides, and polysaccharides.
Fermentation
Microbial digestion process that produces volatile fatty acids in ruminants.
Metabolic pathways
Biochemical processes including glycogenesis, glycogenolysis, glycolysis, Krebs cycle, and gluconeogenesis.
Lipids
Concentrated energy sources and structural components, classified into simple, complex, and derived lipids.
Brush Border Enzymes
Enzymes located on the intestinal villi that digest disaccharides.
