Main Group Elements
The elements in groups 1a, 2a, 3a, 4a, 5a, 6a, 7a, and 8a of the periodic table.
Transition Elements
The middle elements on the periodic table that transition between the main groups from one side to the other.
Alkali Metals
The group 1a elements of the periodic table, which have a common oxidation state of +1.
Alkaline Metals
The group 2a elements of the periodic table, which have a common oxidation state of +2.
Boron Family
The group 3a (also known as group 13) elements, which exhibit a common oxidation state of +3.
Carbon Family
The group 4a elements, named after carbon as the first element in the group, having common oxidation states of +4 for metals and −4 for nonmetals.
Nucleogens
The group 5a or nitrogen family elements (pronounced with a silent p), which commonly exhibit oxidation states of +5 or −3.
Charcotchins
Another name for the group 6a oxygen family elements, which exhibit a common oxidation state of −2.
Halogens
Another name for the group 7a or fluorine family elements, which exhibit a common oxidation state of −1.
Noble Gases
The group 8a elements that do not react with anything, serving as the stable state that other elements attempt to imitate through their oxidation states.
