Cross streaking
Used to isolate individual colonies. Repeated 3 times. Individual colonies observed in 4th.
Selective media
Used to inhibit the growth in a specific microorganism population. Mannitol Salt Agar. Sodium chloride
Differential media
Highlight a certain microorganism’s metabolic capacity. Phenol red. Mannitol. Lactose fermentation
Biochemical tests
Used to identify isolated colonies. Justified in the principle that microorganism’s species share a metabolism patter that can be shown with a simple set of tests. TSI used for coliform microorganism classification.
Optimal decision tree
Divides the results by the positive or negative outcome after a biochemical test.
