what are cells tissues organs and organ system
cells - the basic building block of a living organism
tissue - a group of cells with a similar structure and function
organ - different tissues that work together to perform a certain function
organ system - a group of organs working together to form a particular function
what nutrients do foods contain
carbohydrates (starch)
protein
lipids (fats)
they area large molecules
what happens to those large molecules
they are to large to be absorbed into the bloodstream so they have to be digested. during digestion large food molecules are broken down into small molecules by small enzymes. the small molecules can then be absorbed into the bloodstream
what does the mouth do
enzymes in the saliva begin to digest the starch into smaller sugar molecules
what does the oesophagus and stomach do
the food passes down the oesophagus into the stomach. in the stomach, enzymes begin the digestion of proteins. the stomach also contains hydrochloric acid which helps enzymes to digest proteins, the churning of the stomach turns the food into a fluid
what does the small intestine/ pancreas/liver do
the food now passes into the small intestine and the chemicals are released into the small intestine from the liver and pancreas. The pancreas releases enzymes which continue the digestion of starch and protein they also start the digestion of the lipids. the liver releases bile which helps speed up the digestion of lipids, then the small intestine the small food molecules are absorbed into the bloodstream either by diffusion or by active transport
what does the large intestine do
now the fluid makes its way through the large intestine where water is absorbed into the bloodstream
