Population ecology
The ecological study that focuses on a population, which includes all individuals of one species inhabiting the same geographic area.
Population
All individuals of one species that inhabit the same geographic area and can interbreed.
Logistic growth
A model for predicting population change that assumes a population begins small and has abundant resources.
Carrying capacity (K)
The maximum population size that the environment can support.
Intrinsic rate of increase (rmax)
A constant value based on the reproductive potential of a species.
Density-dependent factors
Factors whose effects increase as the population density increases, such as competition and predation.
Density-independent factors
Factors whose effects are unrelated to population density, often abiotic factors like extreme weather.
r-selected strategy
A life history strategy characterized by high fecundity and low survivorship.
K-selected strategy
A life history strategy characterized by low fecundity and high survivorship.
Metapopulation
A population of smaller populations that are partially separated by unsuitable habitat but connected by migration.
Maximum sustainable yield (MSY)
The maximum population growth rate, which is estimated to be K/2.
Ecological change
Associated changes in the environment resulting from human population growth, including resource depletion and climate change.
Ecosystem services
Benefits provided by ecosystems, such as biological production and water purification, which may decline due to overpopulation.
Human population growth
The increase in the number of humans within a population, impacting global resources and ecosystems.
Population growth model
Mathematical models used to predict changes in population size over time based on various factors.
