are group 0 elements metals or non metals?

non metals

2
New cards

what are group 0 elements also known as?

noble gases

3
New cards

are group 0 elements reactive or not?

they’re highly unreactive

4
New cards

why are the noble gases called group 0?

they have 0 reactivity; they don’t react with other elements to form chemical compounds

5
New cards

why are noble gases unreactive?

the electronic structure is stable; they have a full outer shell so they don’t need to react to gain, lose or share electrons

6
New cards

why do noble gases exist as single atoms?

they don’t form molecules; as noble gases have a full outer shell of electrons, they don’t need to share electrons for more stability

7
New cards

does the boiling point increase or decrease down group 0?

increases

8
New cards

why does the boiling point increase?

between atoms of an element, there’s weak attractive forces known as intermolecular forces; when atoms are boiled or melted, these intermolecular forces are broken & as you go down group 0, the atoms increase in size and there’s more electron shells. the intermolecular forces become stronger so more energy is required to break the forces and so a higher boiling point
