wHAT is the cell-mediated response?
When mainly naïve T cells are activated before fighting a harmful cell
When does the cell-mediated response start?
When a cell or nonspecific leukocyte phagocytoses the threat and presents its antigens
What is the 2nd step of the cell-mediated response?
The naïve T cells encounter its matching antigen on the leukocyte = ACTIVATION
What are the two types of cells the T cell would become in this process?
Helper T cell
Cytotoxic T cell
What do helper T cells do?
Helper T cells are the managers of the response by:
secreting cytokines --> activate or control other lymphocytes
Do most helper T cells die when the infection is ceased?
Yes. Most helper T cells die when the infection is ceased.
Do some helper T cells become memory cells?
Yes. After the infection is ceased.
What is the ultimatum of memory cells in this situation?
Memory cells are ready to produce the same specific antigen if a similar infection occurs in the future
What do cytotoxic T cells do?
Cytotoxic T cells destroy infected and cancer cells.
What do cytotoxic T cells do after differentiation?
It divides rapidly, forming an army
How do cytotoxic cells destroy?
Cytotoxic cells destroy by releasing granule toxins that form pores in the membrane
--> bursts the infected cell
Do cytotoxic T cells remain as memory cells?
Yes. Like helper cells, most die but some remain as memory cells
