Paper chromatography
The technique of separation and identification of chemical substances by moving solvent on sheets or strips of filter paper
The propellig forces
solvent flow
solubility
Solvent flow
When a solvent flows it carries all solutes along wit it
Solubility
The particular solubility of any particular substance in the flowing solvent is the propelling force tending to displace it from the paper and to keep it moving along the solvent.
The more soluble a substance is in the solvent, the more rapidly it will move along the paper.
Retarding forces
Absorption
Partition
Absorption
The absorbent s the cellulose contained in the filter paper
Partition
Chromatography depends on the pressure of two non-mixing liquid phases, one is moving solvent on the filter paper and the other is the bound aqueous phase present in the paper itself (the cellulose)
rate of flow formula (rf value)
