-Us promised to help Vietnam, and he doesn’t want to appear soft on communist( democrats accused of being soft on communism-1945 pres election is soon).

-set of domestic policy initiatives to improve American society(Johnson grew up lower middle class= sympathy for poverty and less fortunate)

Colonial rule in Vietnam (France, Japan(WWII when Japan took over), France again):
-WWII ends= Vietnam declares independence b/c Japan lost and it was the latest country ruling.
- However France was on the winning side of the war(allies) and wants Vietnam=ino-china war 1945
