What is community resilience?
The sustained ability of a community to utilise available resources to respond to, withstand and recover from effects of hazards.
What can affect hazard management?
Modern management strategies, with gathering of information, careful analysis and deliberate planning aim to make most efficient use of money.
How can prediction be used in hazard management?
May be possible to give warnings that will enable action to be taken.
Give an example of an agency showing the importance of prediction.
The National Hurricane Centre in Florida.
They monitor potential hurricanes through information from satellites and land, sea and air based recordings.
What is the reality of prevention?
Largely unrealistic, although there have been ideas and other schemes such as seeding clouds in potential tropical storms to cause more precipitation.
What is protection?
Making modifications to the built environment.

Analysing risks.
Establishing priotities.
Treating risk & implementing a risk reduction plan.
What is Integrated Risk Management?
Identification of hazard, and analysis of risks.

Many countries governments use these schemes, e.g. New Zealand.
What is a weakness of seeding clouds for prevention?
In theory would result in a weakening of the system as it approached land.

Aims to protect people, possessions and the build environment from the impact of the events.
What does prediction usually involve?
Modifications to the built environment like improved sea walls and earthquake proof buildings.
What does community preparedness involve?
Pre-arranged measures that aim to reduce loss of life and property management.
