bread, and alcohol such as wine and beer
what is yeast used to make
yeast, flour, water and sugar
what is bread dough made by mixing
anaerobic respiration also known as fermentation
what does the yeast use the sugars for
co2 and alcohol
what is produced in the fermentation
it is trapped in bubble within the dough making the dough rise
what happens to the co2
the yeast continues to ferment until the temperature of the dough is high enough to kill the yeast
what happens when the dough is baked in the oven
it evaporated away when baked
what happens to the alcohol
when yeast is added to the grapes or grain when you leave it to ferment the yeast respires anaerobically and uses the glucose to produce co2 and alcohol
how does yeast make wine and beer
mix together sugar, yeast and water in a test tube to create anaerobic conditions add a layer of oil to the top, attach a bung with a tube leading to a second tube of water, put the yeast mixture in a beaker and heat to 25 degrees celsius, count how many bubbles of co2 is produced in 1 minutes, repeat the experiment at different heats of water, the more bubbles produced in 1 minute the faster fermentation is taking place.
practical to investigate fermentation in yeast
