What are the three layers of meninges that protect the brain, from outermost to innermost?
Dura mater, arachnoid, and pia mater.
What are the three extensions of the dura mater and their functions?
Falx cerebri (separates the two cerebral hemispheres), Falx cerebelli (separates the two cerebellar hemispheres), and Tentorium cerebelli (separates the cerebrum and cerebellum).
What is the function of the arachnoid villi?
To reabsorb cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) into the bloodstream.
Where is the subarachnoid space located and what circulates within it?
It is located between the arachnoid and the pia mater, where cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) circulates.
What structure produces and filters cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in the ventricles?
Choroid plexuses, which are covered by a simple cuboidal epithelium acting as a blood-brain barrier.
What are the four ventricles of the brain and their locations?
Two lateral ventricles (one in each cerebral hemisphere), the third ventricle (midline between the two halves of the thalamus), and the fourth ventricle (between the brainstem and cerebellum).
What connects the third ventricle to the fourth ventricle?
The cerebral aqueduct (also known as the Silvio aqueduct).
What is the decussation of pyramids in the medulla oblongata?
The crossing of 90% of the nerve fibers from the left pyramid to the right and right pyramid to the left at the junction with the spinal cord.
Which cranial nerves have nuclei associated with the medulla oblongata?
Cranial nerves VIII, IX, X, XI, and XII (Vestibulocochlear, glossopharyngeal, vagus, accessory, and hypoglossal nerves).
What major nerve centers are present in the pons?
Pontine nuclei (transmission of voluntary movements), apneusic and pneumotaxic centers (respiration), and nuclei associated with cranial nerves V, VI, VII, and VIII.
What are the functions of the superior and inferior colliculi in the midbrain?
Superior colliculi are responsible for sight-related movements, and inferior colliculi are responsible for ear/hearing-related movements.
What gives the red nuclei in the midbrain their reddish color?
They are very vascularized and contain deposits of ferric pigment.
What structure joins the two hemispheres of the cerebellum?
The vermis.
What are the three pairs of cerebellar peduncles and their functions?
Superior peduncles (connected with red nuclei of the midbrain), media peduncles (coordinate voluntary movements), and inferior peduncles (receive sensory fibers from the inner ear for balance).
What are the four regions of the hypothalamus?
Mamillary region, tuberal region, supraoptic region, and preoptic region.
What structure connects the hypothalamus to the pituitary gland?
The infundibulum, located in the tuberal region.
What structure joins the two parts of the thalamus?
The gray interthalamic commissure.
What two nerve centers make up the epithalamus?
The pineal gland (produces melatonin to control biological clock) and the habenula (related to smell and emotional responses).
Which fissure separates the frontal and parietal lobes of the cerebrum?
The central sulcus (or Rolando fissure).
Which fissure separates the temporal lobe from the frontal and parietal lobes?
The lateral sulcus (or Sylvian fissure).
What structure joins the two cerebral hemispheres?
The Corpus Callosum.

It controls emotions, smell, and memory; it includes the hippocampus, amygdala, fornix, septal nuclei, terminal and medial stretch, among others.
