What does glottal size configurations mean?
space between vfs according to different activities
Example of glottal size configurations:
1. breathing
1a. Minimal muscle activity of posterior cricoarytenoids
--> result: medium glottis
1b: forced inhalation. Muscle: posterior cricoarytenoids.
---> result: large glottis
Example of glottal size configurations:
2. Voiceless
- vfs abducted
- brief, unobstructed airflow through "medium" glottis
- air flow altered in oral cavity
- result: voiceless sounds ex: p/s/f
- muscle: posterior cricoarytenoids
Example of glottal size configurations:
3. Phonation (voiced)
- vfs adducted
- no-to-minimal glottis
- obstruct/impede air flow momentarily
- result: voiced sound
Example of glottal size configurations:
4. Whisper
Glottis: narrow or small triangular looking
Configuration: vfs partly adducted
-air flow resistance creates turbulence BUT no voiced sound
- result: just aiduble hissing noise
- muscle: lateral cricoarytenoids
Example of glottal size configurations:
5. Breath holding
- vfs adducted and no glottis
- muscles: adductors
- result: trap inahled air in lungs
