What is calorimetry?
The amount of heat energy transferred during chemical reactions
What reaction is exothermic?
When heat is given out
What reaction is endothermic?
When heat energy is taken in
What equation is used to find the amount of heat energy transferred?
Energy transferred = mass of water x 4.2 x temperature increase
What are the units for this equation?
Energy transferred = joules, J
Mass = grams, g
4.2 = g/degrees Celsius
Temperature = degrees Celsius
How can you make a calorimeter?
Placing a beaker of water over a burning sample
What is a calorimeter?
A machine which determines how many calories are in food?
Why is a calorimeter used in the lab not very accurate?
Lots of the heat given off by the burning substance is transferred to the surroundings, not the beaker of water - this means that the calorimeter will underestimate the number of calories in a sample of food
