Catullus 5 Translation

Let us live, my Lesbia, and let us love,

vīvāmus mea Lesbia, atque amēmus

and let us value all the rumors of more severe old men at only a penny!

rūmōrēsque senum sevēriōrum
omnēs ūnius aestimēmus assis!

line 5.5: Suns are able to set and return:

sōlēs occidere et redīre possunt:

Give to me a thousand kisses, then a hundred,

nox est perpetua ūna dormienda.
dā mī bāsia mīlle, deinde centum,

when once the short light has set

nōbīs cum semel occidit brevis lūx,

then another thousand, then a second hundred

dein mīlle altera, dein secunda centum,

then immediately a thousand then a hundred

deinde ūsque altera mīlle, deinde centum.

then, when we will have made many thousand kisses,

dein, cum mīlia multa fēcerīmus,

we will throw them into confusion, lest we know,

conturbābimus illa, nē sciāmus,

or lest anyone bad is able to envy

aut nē quis malus invidēre possit,

when he knows so much of kisses exists.
