• if you have this, can’t be diagnosed w autism

• Persistent difficulty w the social use of verbal and nonverbal communication

ASD (autism spectrum disorder)

• complex developmental disability that typically appears during the first three years of life

• Affected individuals differently and to varying degree

• Symptoms must be evident in early developmental period, but may not be fully manifested until older

• Has to limit and impair everyday function

ASD has to be characterized by what

1. Deficits in social communication / interaction across multiple contexts

2. Restricted patterns of behaviors, interests and / or activities

Cause of autism summary

• suggests a genetic and environmental linkage

Cure for autism

• do not outgrow autism

Warning signs of autism

• lack of or delay in spoken lang

• Repetitive use of lang and / or motor mannerisms

• Little to no eye contact

• Lack of interest in peer relationships

• Lack of spontaneous or make-believe play

• Persistent fixation on parts of object
