Geography

Geographer
Someone who analyzes the Earth from many perspectives, including oceans, plant life, landforms, and human interaction with the environment.
Location
The theme that answers 'Where are we?' It can be absolute or relative.
Absolute Location
Describes the exact position of a place on Earth using coordinates of latitude and longitude.
Relative Location
Described by landmarks, time, direction, or distance in relation to other places.
Place
The physical and human characteristics of a location.
Physical Characteristics
Natural features of a place such as mountains, rivers, and climate.
Human Characteristics
Ideas and actions of people that alter their environment, including architecture and culture.
Human-Environment Interaction
The geographic theme that explores the relationship between humans and their environments.
Movement
The mobility of people, goods, and ideas that shapes the world.
Functional Regions
Regions defined by a specific function, such as metropolitan areas or school districts.
Formal Regions
Regions defined by governmental or administrative boundaries.
Vernacular Regions
Loosely defined regions based on people's perceptions, such as 'The South' or 'The Middle East'.
Region
An area broadly defined by physical characteristics, human impact, and the interaction of humanity and the environment.
