What is the order of skills in foreign language teaching?

• listening → speaking → reading → writing

• word level → sentence level → text level

What does teaching “speaking” entail?

• classes are often teacher-centered

• Speaking happens in chorus, through repetition and imitation

• Move from imitation to reproduction to free speech production

• Chunks help children to produce foreign words without having to think about every individual word

• “assisted performance”: supportive framework

• IRE: Initiation – response – evaluation

• Students have to move beyond familiar structures to communicate

• Provide classroom phrases, label objects in class à rich learning environment

• Creative language production needs to be fostered, speaking activities include: making a date and carrying out dialogues, giving directions in the city (with a map) and a presentation of their family
