Simile

A comparison of two different things using the words "like" or "as" (for example: "as brave as a lion").

Metaphor

A comparison of two different things by stating that one thing is another, without using "like" or "as" (for example: "the snow is a white blanket").

Personification

Giving human traits, feelings, or actions to non-human things, animals, or objects (for example: "the sun smiled down on us").

Onomatopoeia

A word that mimics or reproduces the sound it describes (for example: "buzz", "crash", or "splash").

Alliteration

The repetition of the same starting sound in a series of words (for example: "silly snakes slide slowly").

Hyperbole

An extreme exaggeration used to emphasize a point or add humor, not meant to be taken literally (for example: "I've told you a thousand times").
