What are captive breeding programs (aka Conservation breeding programs)?
Programs that allow zoos to exhibit many species of animals without capturing new individuals from the wild; breeding animals within a controlled environment to preserve species and ease pressure on wild populations.
Why are captive breeding and reintroduction programs important?
They may be the only way for preserving a species that has been reduced to a very small number of individuals. They should be part of a larger conservation program addressing problems facing the species in the wild.
What do captive breeding and reintroduction programs require?
Sustained long-term care and funded efforts, with success not guaranteed.
What steps will be used to demonstrate captive breeding for species in NZ (Kea, Kiwi, Takahe, Kakapo)?
