Spectator Ions
Ions in a chemical reaction that do not change and are excluded from the net ionic equation.
Net Ionic Equation
An equation that includes only the ions that participate in a chemical reaction, excluding spectator ions.
Solubility Rules
Guidelines to determine whether an ionic compound will be soluble or insoluble in water based on its ions.
Group I Ions
Ions such as Li+, Na+, and K+ that are generally soluble in water without exceptions.
Nitrate Ion (NO3-)
An ion that is always soluble in water, without exceptions.
Acetate Ion (CH3COO-)
An ion that is soluble in water with no exceptions.
Ammonium Ion (NH4+)
An ion that is soluble in water, with no exceptions.
Chlorate Ion (ClO3-)
An ion that is soluble in water without exceptions.
Phosphate Ion (PO43-)
An ion that is generally insoluble in water, with exceptions for Group I and NH4+.
Hydroxide Ion (OH-)
An ion that is typically insoluble, with exceptions for Group I, NH4+, Ca2+, Ba2+, Sr2+.
Sulfide Ion (S2-)
An ion that is typically insoluble, except for Group I and NH4+.
Carbonate Ion (CO32-)
An ion that is generally insoluble in water, except for Group I and NH4+.
