What is Interval training?
Periods of short, high intensity work with periods of rest - anaerobic
What is Continuous training?
Longer duration of work (at least 20 mins) at a lower, steady intensity with no rest - aerobic
What is Fartlek training?
A form of continuous training but with changes in intensity and/or terrain - aerobic/anaerobic
What is Plyometric training?
Leaping/Jumping/Bounding movements that increases power - anaerobic
What is Circuit training?
A planned routine with stations of activities with scheduled rest inbetween (very variable)
What is Weight training?
Overcoming a weight/resistance to build muscle.
What is Cross training?
A combination of 2 or more methods of training.
What is Resistance training?
Using a resistance to increase intensity.
What is Flexibility training?
To inrease Range Of Movement around a joint
Flexibility: What is Ballistic training/stretching?
Bouncing stretch to increase pressure on the muscle which increases the range of movement.
Flexibility: What is PNF training/stretching?
Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation - Stretch to your comfortable range, push against a resistance (usually another person/physio), relax, repeat → this will increase your comfortable range of stretch.
What is Speed Agility Quickness (SAQ)?
Sprint training with directional changes → targets neuromuscular adaptations → Increases speed and agility (e.g. ladders, poles, small hurdles…)
What is Functional Stability training?
Target specific muscle groups to increase movement ability and to reduce injury liklihood
What are the +/- of Freeweight vs Machines?
Freeweight: + larger range of exercises, + muscles around the target muscles will work to try and stabalise so they will also develop/grow, + quicker muscle growth, - increased risk of injury (need correct form/knowledge)
Machine: + isolates specific muscle, + safety/lower injury risk, + easier to use, + easier progression, - less stabaliser activation, - fixed paths (may not match unique body proportions)
