559 At mē tum prīmum saevus circumstetit horror.
560 Obstipuī; subiit cārī genitōris imāgō,
561 ut rēgem aequaevum crūdēlī vulnere vīdī
562 vītam exhālantem, subiit dēserta Creūsa
563 et dīrepta domus et parvī cāsus Iūlī.

But then harsh horror surrounded me first.
I stood agape; the image of the beloved father arose,
when I saw the king of equal age
breathing out life from the bloody wound, deserted Creusa
and plundered home and misfortune of little Ascanius arose.

564 Respiciō et quae sit mē circum cōpia lūstrō.
565 Dēseruēre omnēs dēfessī, et corpora saltū
566 ad terram mīsēre aut ignibus aegra dedēre.

I look back and survey what abundance is around me.
All weary men deserted [me] and the sent sick bodies
to the land with a leap or they gave [them] to the fires.

567 [Iamque adeō super ūnus eram, cum līmina Vestae
568 servantem et tacitam sēcrētā in sēde latentem
569 Tyndarida aspiciō; dant clāram incendia lūcem
570 errantī passimque oculōs per cūncta ferentī.

[and now I survived alone to such an extent, when
I behold Helen preserving the thresholds of Vesta and
lying hidden silent in a secret seat; The fires give bright light [to me]
wandering and bringing my eyes all about through everything.

571 Illa sibi infēstōs ēversa ob Pergama Teucrōs
572 et Danaum poenam et dēsertī coniugis īrās
573 praemetuēns, Troiae et patriae commūnis Erīnys,
574 abdiderat sēsē atque ārīs invīsa sedēbat.

That one, the Fury of Troy and the joint fatherland fearing beforehand
the Trojans hostile to her on account of the overturned Pergama
and the penalty of the Greeks and the anger of the deserted husband,
had hidden herself and,hateful, was sitting on the altars.

575 Exarsēre ignēs animō; subit īra cadentem
576 ulcīscī patriam et scelerātās sūmere poenās.
577 "Scīlicet haec Spartam incolumis patriāsque Mycēnās
578 aspiciet, partōque ībit rēgīna triumphō?

he flames burned up in my mind; anger arises
to avenge the falling fatherland and to exact wicked punishments.
"Clearly this [woman] safe will look at Sparta and paternal Mycena
And as a queen will go with a triumph having been gained?

579 Coniugiumque domumque patris nātōsque vidēbit
580 Īliadum turbā et Phrygiīs comitāta ministrīs?

And will she see both a husband and the home of her father and sons
Having been accompanied by a mob of Trojan women and Phrygian attendants?

581 Occiderit ferrō Priamus? Troia arserit ignī?
582 Dardanium totiēns sūdārit sanguine lītus?
583 Nōn ita. namque etsī nūllum memorābile nōmen
584 fēmineā in poenā est, habet haec victōria laudem;

Will Priam have died by the sword? Will Troy have burned with fire?
Will the shore of the Trojans have perspired with blood so many times ?
[It will] not [be] so. For even if there is no memorable name
In the punishment of a woman, this victory has praise;

585 exstīnxisse nefās tamen et sūmpsisse merentēs
586 laudābor poenās, animumque explēsse iuvābit
587 ultrīcis ~fāmam et cinerēs satiāsse meōrum."

I will nevertheless be praised to have extinguished the unspeakable thing and to have exacted the deserving punishments
And it will help me to have fulfilled my mind
The reputation of the vengeful one and to have to have satisfied the ashes of my men.

588 Tālia iactābam et furiātā mente ferēbar,]
589 cum mihi sē, nōn ante oculīs tam clāra, videndam
590 obtulit et pūrā per noctem in lūce refulsit
591 alma parēns, cōnfessa deam quālisque vidērī
592 caelicolīs et quanta solet, dextrāque prehēnsum
593 continuit roseōque haec īnsuper addidit ōre:

I was uttering such things, and I was being carried [through streets] by a frenzied mind,
When my nurturing parent presented herself to me to be seen previously not so clear to [my] eyes
and glittered through the night in the pure light,
Having revealed [herself] as a goddess both of what sort and how great
She is accustomed to be seen by divinities, and she restrained [me] having been seized by her right hand
And added these things beside with her rosy mouth:

594 "Nāte, quis indomitās tantus dolor excitat īrās?
595 Quid furis? Aut quōnam nostrī tibi cūra recessit?

"Son, what so great grief arouses uncontrolled angers?
Why do you infuriate? Or to where did your care for me withdraw?

596 Nōn prius aspiciēs ubi fessum aetāte parentem
597 līqueris Anchīsēn, superet coniūnxne Creūsa
598 Ascaniusque puer? Quōs omnēs undique Graiae
599 circum errant aciēs et, nī mea cūra resistat,
600 iam flammae tulerint inimīcus et hauserit ēnsis.

Will you not see first where you have deserted Anchises the parent weary in age,
[whether] wife Cruesa and boy Ascanius have survived?
The Greek battle lines wander on all sides
Around all those and if my care should not stop them,
now the flames would have carried [them] off and an unfriendly sword would have drained [their blood].

601 Nōn tibi Tyndaridis faciēs invīsa Lacaenae
602 culpātusve Paris, dīvum inclēmentia, dīvum
603 hās ēvertit opēs sternitque ā culmine Troiam.

Not for you the odious appearance of Tyndaris of Sparta
Or the blamed Paris, the harshness of the gods, of the gods,
Destroys this wealth and it lays low Troy from the summit.
