Executive branch (n.)
One of three branches of the federal government, this branch is led by the president, and primarily responsible for implementing and enforcing the nation’s laws.
Formal powers (n.)
Powers explicitly granted to the president in the Constitution.
Informal powers (n.)
Powers that are not mentioned in the Constitution, but that presidents have adopted over time.
Executive order (n.)
A rule or order issued by the president without the cooperation of Congress and having the force of law.
Cabinet (n.)
A group of advisors to the president, consisting of the most senior appointed officers of the executive branch who head the fifteen executive departments.
Electoral College (n.)
The constitutionally created group of individuals, chosen by the states, with the responsibility of formally selecting the next U.S. president.
Commander-in-Chief (n.)
The role of the president as supreme commander of the military forces of the United States and of the state national guard units when they are called into federal service.
State of the Union Address (n.)
The annual message delivered before Congress in which the President outlines legislative priorities for the session to come.
Popular Vote (n.)
The act of voting by a populace, or group of voters.
Pardon (n.)
The action of forgiving someone for an offense.
Veto (n.)
The President’s constitutional right to reject a law passed by Congress. Congress may override the President’s veto with a two-thirds vote.
