Fuselage
The body of an aircraft to which the wings and tail unit are attached, providing space for payloads including crew, passengers, and cargo.
Truss Fuselage
A type of fuselage consisting of an assemblage of members forming a rigid framework, which may include bars, beams, rods, tubes, and wires.
Bays
The spaces between the lateral bracings in a truss fuselage.
Pratt truss
A truss sub-classification where longerons are connected with rigid vertical and lateral members known as struts, and diagonal members carry both tension and compression.
Warren truss
A truss sub-classification where longerons are connected with only diagonal members.
Monocoque
A fuselage design where the skin carries all structural stresses and formers are used to maintain the shape, similar to a coke-can.
Semi-monocoque
The most common design for modern transport aircraft, consisting of a framework of vertical and longitudinal members covered with a structural skin that carries a large percentage of stresses.
Skin
The primary load-carrying member that covers the rigid fuselage framework, typically made from aluminium alloy T2024 or composite materials like graphite and carbon.
Frames
Circumferential members spaced at regular intervals along the length of the fuselage to stabilize the skin and stringers and distribute concentrated loads.
Formers
Lighter frames installed between the main frames to help maintain the shape of the fuselage.
Bulkheads
Heavy frames reinforced by beams that seal the passenger cabin section and maintain the pressure envelope, normally found at the forward and aft of the aircraft.
Stringers
Longitudinal members spaced around the fuselage circumference that transmit skin loads into the body frames and stiffen the skin to prevent bulging or buckling.
Longeron
A principal longitudinal member of the framing of an aircraft fuselage or nacelle that is usually continuous across a number of points of support.
Floor beams
Horizontal members that attach to the frame and run across the fuselage to provide support to the cabin floor.
Shear ties
Structural components extending longitudinally along the intersection of floor beams and frames that transfer payloads or dead weight from one component to another.
Keel beam
A major longitudinal fuselage component located in the wing center section and wheel-well area that reinforces the section due to openings and fittings.
Fail-safe design philosophy
A strategy to prevent structural failure from crippling the aircraft by using two-component systems where each component is capable of carrying the full structural load.
Tail cone
The rear section of the fuselage that tapers to a minimal size and serves as the attachment point for aft flight-control surfaces.
Cockpit
The portion of the aircraft occupied by the flight crew, designed to be watertight and noise-minimized with a lockable door for security.
Cargo Compartment
The lower lobe of the fuselage where freight and baggage are packed in contoured containers or secured with cargo nets.
Plug-type door
A door designed to be larger than the fuselage opening; higher cabin pressure seats the door firmly into the frame to mitigate rapid decompression risk.
Doublers
Aluminium reinforcements used around window openings in the fuselage to help manage operational loads.
Acrylic resin
The material used for the construction of structural window panes in transport category aircraft.
Ventilation hole (Window)
A hole in the window assembly used to equalise pressure between the cabin and the airspace between the two window panes.
PSIU
Passenger Service / Information Units located within the interior linings above seat rows.
Dado panels
Interior lining panels designed to open if there is a significant pressure difference between the cabin and cargo compartments.
Vacuum waste system
The system to which lavatories in the passenger decks are connected for waste disposal.
