  • irregular syllables in last lines (all night long we have not stirred, and yet god has not said a word’ - mental unstainbility and unsettling

  • Dramatic monologue- only given his perspective he seems to be muffling and silence her which is the way the her lover wanted her to be

  • Enjambement - hi ting towards true instability of narrator, undermines the stability of the repeated rhyme scheme

  • farmer bride - imbalanced romantic relationships leading to violence, both first person only their perspective, natural imagery present frustrations

    • distance between characters,in PL she seduces him and appears to want to be near him, in farmers bride she wants to avoid him at all costs

    • PL he spends the whole night with her dead body, in FB he acknowledges the distance between the. ‘This but a stair betwixt us’

Comparisons - sonnet 29

  • longing as a result of denied physical touch in relationship -

    • PL first person speaker represents distance as the affair is forbidden, S29 - first person conveys intense love as a sonnet dedicated to absent silent lover

    • Both convey fustrations

    • PL- uses natural imagery to present frustrations, S29- uses extended metaphor of natural imagery to connect the power of her feelings with nature

    • PL- ends with a distrurbed + murderous speaker explains how he kills and slept with her S29- ends with a sense of resolution as the come together

    • PL- obsession presented as cold and calculating who seems to enjoy killing her S29 - much more collected and calm controls her emotions
