Autonomy
The ability of a competent individual to make informed, uncoerced decisions about their care or life. Must understand all risks and benefits of a procedure and the likelihood of success or recurrence. The ability for a patient to participate in their own care instead of being directed.
Justice
Burdens and benefits of new or experimental treatment should be distributed equally among all groups in society. Promoting fair and equitable treatment of individuals within populations. Ensuring that each individual receives what they deserve or are owed.
Beneficence
The obligation to act in a way that maximizes the well-being of the patient, or to act in their best interest. Encourages helping others and improving their lives.
Non-maleficence
“First, do no harm”, healthcare providers should do everything in their power to avoid harming their patients and take steps to prevent negative outcomes.
