Ligament
Dense fibrous connective tissue that attaches bone to bone, providing strength and support in joints while enabling movement.
Fibrocartilage
A type of cartilage containing collagen fibers located in intervertebral disks and menisci of knee joints; provides structure and support under compression.
Hyaline Cartilage
Resilient cartilage that forms embryonic skeletal models, covers long bone ends in joints, and makes up costal and respiratory tube cartilages.
Elastic Cartilage
Flexible cartilage containing elastic fibers located in the external ear, epiglottis, and tip of the nose.
Fontanel
Unossified membrane-covered "soft spot" between cranial bones in a newborn skull that does not fully ossify until several months after birth.
Osteogenic Cell
A stem cell located in bone tissue that differentiates into an osteoblast.
Osteoblast
A bone-forming cell that produces and secretes bone matrix (osteoid) and facilitates the deposition of hard hydroxyapatite crystals.
Osteocyte
A mature bone cell housed in a lacuna that maintains the bone matrix and keeps bone tissue healthy.
Osteoclast
A cell responsible for bone resorption and the breakdown of bone matrix.
Compact Bone
Hard, dense bone tissue organized into osteons (haversian systems) that forms the outer layer and shaft of long bones.
Spongy Bone
Cancellous bone tissue structured as a lattice of trabeculae containing spaces filled with red bone marrow.
Osteon
The structural unit of compact bone (haversian system) consisting of concentric lamellae, lacunae with osteocytes, canaliculi, and a central canal.
Lamella
A layer of matrix in bone tissue containing collagen fibers running in alternating directions to resist twisting forces.
Lacuna
A small space or cavity within the bone matrix occupied by an osteocyte.
Canaliculi
Tiny canals radiating from lacunae that connect osteocytes to each other and to the central canal for nutrient passage.
Central Canal
A longitudinal channel running through the center of an osteon (haversian canal) housing blood vessels and nerve fibers.
Perforating Canal
A transverse canal (Volkmann's canal) running perpendicular to central canals that connects periosteal blood vessels and nerves to internal bone cavities.
Periosteum
A double-layered membrane covering the exterior surface of bone, consisting of an outer fibrous layer and an inner osteogenic layer.
Endosteum
A connective tissue membrane lining internal bony canals, the medullary cavity, and covering trabeculae of spongy bone.
Trabeculae
Lattice-like struts of bone matrix containing lamellae and osteocytes that compose spongy bone without formal osteon structures.
Intramembranous Ossification
Bone formation process where flat bones (such as skull bones and clavicles) develop directly from mesenchymal connective tissue membranes.
Endochondral Ossification
Bone formation process where embryonic hyaline cartilage models are gradually replaced by bone tissue, forming most bones in the skeleton.
Appositional Growth
The growth of a bone in thickness or diameter by the addition of new tissue onto its periosteal surface.
Diaphysis
The main cylindrical shaft of a long bone.
Epiphysis
The enlarged terminal end of a long bone.
Metaphysis
The region of a long bone between the diaphysis and epiphysis containing the epiphyseal plate or line.
Medullary Cavity
The hollow space inside the diaphysis of a long bone filled with yellow bone marrow.
Tuberosity
A large, rounded, often roughened projection on a bone that serves as an attachment site for muscles and ligaments.
Crest
A prominent, narrow ridge of bone used for muscle and ligament attachment.
Trochanter
A very large, blunt, irregularly shaped process for muscle attachment found exclusively on the femur.
Line (Bone Marking)
A narrow ridge of bone that is less prominent than a crest.
Tubercle
A small, rounded projection or process on a bone.
Epicondyle
A raised area situated above or on a condyle.
Spine (Bone Marking)
A sharp, slender, often pointed projection on a bone.
Process (Bone Marking)
Any prominent bony projection or outgrowth.
Comminuted Fracture
A fracture where the bone fragments into three or more pieces; common in elderly individuals with brittle bones.
Compression Fracture
A fracture in which the bone is crushed, common in porous bones subjected to severe trauma.
Spiral Fracture
A ragged bone break produced when excessive twisting forces are applied to a bone.
Epiphyseal Fracture
A fracture where the epiphysis separates from the diaphysis along the epiphyseal cartilage plate.
Depressed Fracture
A fracture in which the broken bone section is pressed inward, typical of skull fractures.
Greenstick Fracture
An incomplete bone break where one side of the shaft breaks while the other bends; common in children due to high organic matrix composition.
Hematoma
A mass of clotted blood forming at a fracture site as the initial stage of bone repair.
Osteoporosis
A bone disorder characterized by loss of total bone mass caused by overactive osteoclasts and underactive osteoblasts.
Osteomalacia
A disorder in adults characterized by poorly mineralized, soft bones.
Rickets
A disorder in children analogous to osteomalacia caused by inadequate bone mineralization, leading to bowed legs.
Paget's Disease
A bone disorder characterized by an excessively high rate of bone deposition.
Osteosarcoma
A primary malignant form of bone cancer.
