What is the Automated Weather System?
Any of the automated weather sensor platforms that collect weather data at airports and disseminate the weather information via radio and/or landline. The systems currently consist of the Automated Surface Observing System (ASOS) and Automated Weather Observation System (AWOS)
What airports air traffic controllers must be vigilant for changes in weather
Controllers at airports in Luke’s airspace and are within 150 miles of the field must remain vigilant for changes in weather, Goodyear, Glendale, Scottsdale, Gila Bend, Phoenix Sky Harbor, etc
How many positions must be equipped with an Aural Alarm
Facilities with multiple weather displays only need one aural alarm active at one position, the volume must be loud enough for all positions to hear.
How is the current altimeter setting obtained
From Direct Reading Instruments or from weather reporting statements
What is the AFAS and what is it the primary distribution system for
Is an information display that provides controllers with important real time data for airfield management and operations. Shows weather information like wind and more to be issued to pilots. Primarly shows weather observations, forecasts, and resource protection
What information must be visible from every page of the AFAS
The ATIS, Runway in use, current altimeter setting, and wind direction and speed
What controller is responsible for obtaining weather when the AFAS is out
Clearance delivery is responsible for obtaining weather information when the AFAS isn’t operational
What is the JET
The Joint Environmental Toolkit (JET), is the primary source of information for the AFAS and is the primary dissemination method for weather observations and forecasts. Used to display forecasts and observations, as well as other weather information and is used by many branches of the military.
What Weather information is found on each AFAS
Each AFAS has wind information, the ATIS code, and has more in-depth information like cloud cover/type of clouds, weather phenomena like rain or mist, and weather information for surrounding airports that are in Luke’s airspace like Glendale and Goodyear that controllers can provide to pilots.
