Staffing
The process of putting people to jobs, concerned with obtaining, utilising, and maintaining a satisfactory and satisfied work force.
Work load analysis
An estimation of the number and kind of persons required for various jobs in the organization.
Workforce analysis
An estimation of the existing persons within the organization to identify overstaffing or understaffing.
Recruitment
The process of searching for prospective employees and stimulating them to apply for jobs to create a pool of candidates.
Selection
The process of identifying and choosing the best person from the available pool of candidates using employment tests and interviews.
Placement
The act of assigning specific jobs to the candidates who have been selected for appointment.
Orientation (Induction)
Introducing the selected employee to other employees and familiarising them with the rules and policies of the organization.
Training
The act of increasing the knowledge and technical skills of an employee for doing a particular job efficiently.
Development
A wider process concerned with the overall growth of an employee in all respects, preparing them for higher jobs in the future.
Performance Appraisal
The evaluation of an employee’s current or past performance against certain predetermined standards to provide feedback.
Compensation
All forms of pay or rewards going to employees, significantly influenced by a company's financial strength and competitive salary offers.
Transfers
The horizontal shifting of an employee from one job, department, or shift to another, not necessarily involving a change in salary.
Promotions
The vertical shifting of employees to higher positions carrying increased responsibilities, facilities, status, and pay.
Direct Recruitment
A method where a notice is placed on the notice-board for casual or ‘badli’ workers, usually for unskilled or semi-skilled vacancies.
Casual Callers
A source of recruitment where organizations use a database of unsolicited applicants to fill vacancies as they arise.
Employment Exchange
Government-run agencies that serve as a source of recruitment for unskilled and skilled operative jobs.
Placement Agencies
Professional recruiters that provide nationwide services in matching personnel demand and supply for a fee.
Management Consultants
Firms that help organizations recruit technical, professional, and managerial personnel through extensive screening.
Campus Recruitment
A practice where businesses recruit technical, professional, and managerial staff directly from colleges and institutes.
Labour Contractors
Employees of the organization who maintain close contacts with labourers to provide unskilled workers at short notice.
Aptitude Test
A measure of an individual's potential for learning new skills and their capacity to develop.
Intelligence Tests
Psychological tests used to measure an individual's learning ability, decision-making, and intelligence quotient (IQ).
Personality Tests
Tests that provide clues to a person’s emotions, reactions, maturity, and value systems.
Trade Test
A test designed to measure the existing skills, knowledge, and proficiency of an individual in a specific profession or technical area.
Interest Tests
Tests used to identify the pattern of interests or the level of involvement a person has for specific jobs.
On-the-Job Methods
Training methods applied at the workplace where employees learn while they are actually working.
Off-the-Job Methods
Training methods used away from the workplace, allowing employees to learn before they start doing the job.
Apprenticeship Training
A method where a trainee works under the supervision of a master worker to acquire skilled trades; often involves a stipend.
Internship Training
An agreement between educational institutes and business organizations where students gain practical experience while studying.
Vestibule Training
Training conducted in a classroom setting away from the work floor, using actual equipment and materials to simulate the real environment.
