1st swing of the axe
Gawain flinches away, but the Green Knight was not trying to hit him. The Green Knight taunts him. Gawain says he flinched because he cannot pick his head up after it’s cut off. This swing represents the first kiss between Gawain and the Lady of the Court
2nd swing of the axe
The Green Knight pretends to hit Gawain again, but this time Gawain does not flinch, like he promised. Gawain taunts the Green Knight to hit him instead of pretending. This swing represents the second day that Gawain and the Lady of the Court kissed.
3rd swing of the axe
The Green Knight slightly cut into Gawain’s neck. Gawain jumps away and puts his helm back on. He says he endured his hit. This swing wasn’t supposed to kill, only hurt. The Green Knight says it represents the third day that Gawain and the Lady kissed. It leaves a scar to remind Gawain of what happened.
