Hippocrates (c. 460-377 BCE)

Believed that diseases have natural causes rooted in the environment, diet, and lifestyle. Suggested the secularity behind diseases but didn’t discredit the idea of spirituality of disease. Proposed that the human body contains four humors: blood, phlegm, yellow bile, and black bile. Believed in holistic healing. Established core ethical standards for physicians called the Hippocratic Corpus.

Galen (c. 129-210 CE)

Extremely influential in medicine for centuries, being the final medical writer in English before the Middle Ages. Supported humoral theory and the theory that disease is caused by an imbalance in the body. Believed that studying anatomy through animal dissection is the core of medical knowledge. Proposed that there is a link between the mind and body.
