Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation (PNF)
A technique used for stretching that integrates active muscle contractions into stretching maneuvers.
Hold–relax (HR)
A PNF technique involving isometric contraction of a shortened muscle followed by passive stretching.
Agonist contraction (AC)
A PNF technique where the patient actively moves the limb and contracts the muscle opposing the shortened muscle.
Hold–relax with agonist contraction (HR-AC)
A combined PNF technique that includes both hold–relax and agonist contraction.
Isometric contraction
A muscle contraction without any visible movement in the angle of the joint.
Concentric contraction
A muscle contraction that occurs when a muscle shortens while generating force.
Normal innervation
The proper neural control that allows voluntary muscle action.
Muscle guarding
Involuntary muscle contraction resulting from pain or injury, restricting movement.
Dynamic flexibility
The ability to move a joint through its complete range of motion with efficiency.
Limitation point
The point at which a muscle can no longer stretch without compromising function.
