Electrochemical Cell
A device capable of either generating electrical energy from chemical reactions or facilitating chemical reactions through the introduction of electrical energy.
Daniell Cell Reaction
The overall cell reaction represented as Zn(s)+Cu2+(aq)→Zn2+(aq)+Cu(s).
Anode
The electrode where oxidation occurs; in a Daniell cell, this is the Zn(s) electrode.
Cathode
The electrode where reduction occurs; in a Daniell cell, this is the Cu(s) electrode.
Salt Bridge
A component containing a salt such as KCl mixed with Agar-agar that connects the two half-cells.
Oxidation Half-reaction
The specific reaction taking place at the anode: Zn(s)→Zn2+(aq)+2e−.
Reduction Half-reaction
The specific reaction taking place at the cathode: Cu2+(aq)+2e−→Cu(s).
Standard Electrode Potential for Zn
The potential associated with the zinc electrode, which is −0.761 or simply −0.76.
Standard Electrode Potential for Cu
The potential associated with the copper electrode, which is 0.34.
Galvanic Cell
A type of electrochemical cell, such as the Daniell cell, that produces an electric current from a spontaneous redox reaction.
