Realism
Anarchy makes states aggressive; lack of certainty and trust requires self-help; war has offensive and defensive justifications.
Liberalism
Institutions and regimes create peace and order by facilitating trust and reducing uncertainty; interdependence makes war less likely; only defensive war is justified.
Alliances
Help states cooperate militarily in the event of war; can be offensive or defensive, symmetric or asymmetric.
